When I was a much younger man, ahum, some would call me middle aged these days, I used to have what is so aptly called twenty twenty vision. I would always enjoy doing an eye test at an optician’s or I remember a particularly rewarding vision test while drafted in to the army for my national service. The eye doctor was a tad amazed at my exceptionally clear vision. Hey, I have very bad teeth, give me a break. I have to have something, now don’t you agree? Surely, you can see where I am coming from.

Even tiny writing, some way off in the distance or in the background would not really phase me. I saw that it was good, very good.Alas, these days my eyes are not quite what they used to be, I’m afraid to say. And, lo and behold, I too now am the hesitantly proud owner of a pair of reading glasses. Oh well, what can you do?My wife is considering getting contact lenses and I urged her to find out a bit more about that.

Beauty, my dear friends, is in the eye of the beholder. Now, you have all heard that one before, I wager? And, to be honest, I believe that old chestnut to contain a kernel or two of truth. What one person considers the pinnacle of good taste and refinement to others may appear as mere dross. That is the way of the world and I do not think this will ever change to any great extent.People are very different and that diversity of taste, predilection and interest is something I like and value.

My mother is a lovely lady. Of course, that is more or less what any one would say about his or her mother, I realise that full well, have no fear. At the moment I am studying proofreading. It's a distance learning course and, I have to say, it's not that easy. But then that should come as no surprise. I think I also slightly misunderstood the concept. I thought for a while that it was all about spotting grammatical and spelling errors. And of course it is but I am now finding out that the real craft of proofreading involves spotting errors or anomalies between two texts, two documents if you like. That puts a rather more mundane complexion on things. But I'll hang in there and keep plodding away.

Tessa

Today, we said goodbye to our lovely cat Tessa. She was sixteen years old and was in poor health. The kind thing was, ultimately, to say goodbye to her, hard as that was. My wife held her in her lap while Max, the lovely and gently Vet, administered the terminal injection.

It was so sad but she had had a wonderful life and had been loved so much by us. She was truly a great friend, always happy to see us, always sociable and affectionate.

Sleep soft, sweet Tessa. We shall miss you very much.

In a couple of weeks I am getting married to the most wonderful woman in the world and in doing so I will be the happiest man alive, without a shadow of a doubt. There was so much to do in preparation for this momentous event, let me tell you.We had to arrange the Church, reception, cars and a million other things besides.

For our Best Man and Groomsman we decided to present them with some 'cufflinks' as a token of our gratitude. In the end, we chose some really nice ones although the service in the store we I purchased them was less than agreeable, to day the least.

I suppose I should have opted for cuffcrazy.com to buy some 'cufflinks'. Live and learn, dear readers, live and learn. You only live once and although some people get married more than once, you do want it to be as perfect as possible, to an extent. Getting your bridal party some excellent gifts is just part of it but it's important none the less.

The level of denial is amazing among Gillard hangers-on. It is a wonderful life, that much I know, and things can certainly be even better if you happen to be lucky enough to have a good health. Balancing life’s pleasures and a healthy life style is not always a very easy thing to do, certainly, that may be the case I would agree. But as so often in life, we generally do have some modicum of choice. At each stage, whilst living our daily lives, to some degree we do have choices.

Do I take that piece of birthday cake offered to me when yet another one of my colleagues is having his or her birthday? Or do I politely decline? Do I go for a walk or a run or do I vege out on the sofa watching ‘the biggest loser’ or some such show?

It can be hard though, also when you are not that young anymore. As a man in his forties, mine is a constant battle against the bulge. It's astounding. The feral lay-abouts run amok, torching neighbourhood shops, looting plasma flatscreens and assorted 'life essentials', engage in some light killing and maiming and the usual left-wing clap trap gets brought out again. 'They only wanted a platform, they are demanding a voice, it's society what gone and made them do it.' Basically, the bizarre logic seems to be that the ones who are culpable are not the actual perpetrators, but rather the hard-working middle classes (so despised by English left-wing chattering classes) who pay taxes and have some ambition and a modicum of morality.

It amazes me that the likes of the ABC here in Australia, of course the BBC and the Guardian in the UK, are so keen on turning the wayward feral youths into victims, thus removing all sense of accountability from these groups. Perhaps some are 'disadvantaged'. Would that be a reason perhaps for such an individual to get off their video-game wielding arse, pick up a course or learn a trade and make something of themselves, possibly in spite of the odds? Listening to the liberal geniuses, the obvious course of action is rather to get your mates together and smash the windows of your local shop, loot anything valuable, taking care to destroy as much as possible on the way and then as a final parting gesture torch the livelihood of some hard-working small business man/woman/family. That kind of logic bodes well for the future. Not..

Always learning

I have always had a great interest in learning. I was dazzled by the world and its lustrous diversity, its many cultures, history, far away exotic places and cities. I used to sit for hours, thumbing through endless pages of the family encyclopedia, just taking it all in. I could never understand how some people some times said they were bored. How could anyone be bored when we live in such a fascinating and exhilirating world? I ask you..

I still enjoy learning and am about to start on a new course, doing something I really enjoy. Of course, needless to day I first checked out a number of Online Universities to orientate myself as to the courses on offer at various institutions and make appropriate enquiries. With online learning there are just so many options available and it really pays to do your homework, pun intended.

For instance, I would be very intersted in certain online degree programs in film as, when all is said and done, it can be asserted that I am a bit of film buff at heart and learning more about the cinematic arts would be wonderful, that much is certain.

Spent a glorious weekend away with my darling in the Blue Mountains. Fine meals, great walks, relaxing by an open fire, driving along gorgeous valleys; just wonderful. We visited the stunning Jenolan Caves where we explored the Lucas Cave. There was plenty of wildlife; incredibly tame birds, wallabies and even a Black Snake. Amazing..

My family and I watched with pleasure and a fair amount of awe how Prince William married Kate Middleton. The pump as well as the circumstance were impressive. On a more mundane note, however, I was amazed how the cheesy would-be subversive 'Chaser' show was prevented from showing a special episode in which there would have been much taking of the Mickey. Apparently, all it took was a directive from the Palace to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation forbidding the airing of the show, amazing. That's real power. Watched the excellent Brick Lane the other day. I enjoyed the poetic imagery and gentle style of narration. The juxtaposition of the village in Bangladesh and London's East End was striking. Also, I loved the musical soundtrack. I just love those romantic melodies and those fabulous clear female singers' voices. Wonderful..

Everytime I Skype my ex-wife back in the Old Country the two cats I used to co-own or be owned by, if you prefer, tend to rock up and settle within few around my ex-partner. I wouldn't put it past those two little rascals to recognise my voice but perhaps I'm just being wistful. They are lovely though and it is always nice to see them. Ten thousand miles away and I can still stay in touch with my loved ones as well as my beloved little fur balls. Let's hear it for modern technology.
